The Shrine at Altamira
"This will be terrible; do not deceive yourself. We hear stories like this on television but we do not look, and when they turn up in newspapers, we glance away, because we know there are crazy people and people who are mad with love, but we refuse to know any more than that."
This is one of the most physically painful books you'll ever read. This is the story of a man who burns his son alive. It shows us how people can do horrible things without being horrible people. And if these people are ordinary, then ordinary people like you and me can do horrible things as well.
But this book does not leave you in despair. You come to see that even *through* all the fuckedup-ness, we try so *damn* hard to love each other. We're just so broken, and this book is amazing for how well it addresses this issue. If you've read it, I'd love to talk to you about it, because most people don't really get the implications of it until reading it a few times and discussing it. What do you think?

I think I will read this! ... only it will be after New Years. True insanity is having a houseful of out of town guests and preparing a christmas dinner for 20! lol
Thanks for the recommendation!
And yes, it is based on a true story.
I tried to pick this up at Border's today and they weren't carrying any copies of it. I'll have to get it from amazon when I get paid.
