Common Ground: Lying
I'd like to introduce you all to a new website, started by former Voxer Amanda, where people with different religious backgrounds come together to discuss topics and find Common Ground.
This week's topic is about Morality and Lying. Go read all the articles. :)
From mine:
“Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself
and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern
any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into
disrespect towards himself and others. Not respecting anyone, he ceases
to love, and having no love, he gives himself up to passions and coarse
pleasures, in order to occupy and amuse himself, and in his vices
reaches complete beastiality, and it all comes from lying continually
to others and to himself.”
- the Elder Zossima, Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
At first, when I noticed this week’s topic was lying, I figured it would be hard to come up with something interesting. But then it struck me: Out of all the people we lie to, who do we lie to most often? The simple answer: ourselves. So, in this article we are going to take a look at what it means to be trapped in these lies, what it takes to get out of them, and what it is like to live a life that is truly authentic.
Then to discuss it, join the Common Ground Forums! :)
